The email response to Stereo3D Toolbox has been overwhelming since we publicly released beta v0.7. I’ve tried to keep up with the emails but I thought it might be a better idea to just put together a FAQ instead of responding individually to each question. Hopefully you will find the answer to your question below. If not please email me stereo3d@timdashwood.com and I ‘ll be sure to add it here. BTW v1.0 is shaping up to be a great release and we have a couple surprises in store! Thanks again for your input.

F.A.Q.
Will Stereo3D Toolbox work with parallel and toe-in footage?
The first release of Stereo3D Toolbox fully supports parallel stereoscopy, but we will be adding keystone compensation in a future update for converged toe-in adjustments.
How can i get the watermark removed? Will there be a trial version?
There won’t be a watermark-free trial version available. Instead we have revised the watermark to make it more discreet so that content created with the plugin will be viewable and you will have the freedom to use the plugin for free as long as the watermark is retained. We encourage users of the watermarked trial version to upload their videos to Vimeo, YouTube, DailyMotion, or your own personal websites.
If you need the watermark removed then a license will need to be purchased from Noise Industries via FxFactory.
How much will the Stereo3D Toolbox License cost?
If you can live with the watermark then no license will be necessary and you can use the plugin for free. $0.00. A full license can be purchased from Noise Industries for $389 USD.
What software do you use to make your screencasts?
Works great with S3D footage but what about CGI?
You can utilize the plugin in After Effect CS3 or CS4 with two separate 3D “cameras” in separate sub-comps. Tutorials describing this technique are coming soon. The plugin also works in Apple Motion but Motion is limited to outputting from only one camera so the functionality is limited to groups. More on this soon.
Can the plugin send the left eye and right eye to separate outputs?
No. Currently we can’t send any specific video to specific Kona or Blackmagic video cards. The plugin filter is sequence-dependent so unfortunately what you see is what you get. There are hardware solutions that can take a side-by-side or over/under output and demux it back to discreet left/right outputs for dual-projector support.
Can the plugin use Multi-angle clips as the left right sources in FCP?
Unfortunately the FxPlug architecture doesn’t support using separate angles as inputs. Only the active angle can be used for input. I will be posting a workflow detailing how to utilize multiclip with Stereo3D Toolbox.
Can the plugin use VIdeo Layer 1 & 2 as the left right sources in FCP?
Unfortunately the FxPlug architecture also doesn’t support looking down or up at other video layers. Clips from other layers can be dragged into the image well in the plugin filter but the filter will use the first frame of the source clip instead of the current frame in the timeline. There are ways around this using subclipping. I will be posting a workflow detailing how to use and sync subclips with Stereo3D Toolbox.
What is the best way to manage S3D editing? What about Neo3D?
If you have separate left and right clips I have a couple suggested workflows for FCP that I will post soon but currently the most seamless solution is Cineform’s Neo3D, which syncs your separate Cineform quicktimes into single “paired” quicktimes. Neo3D can then be set to side by side or stacked and Stereo3D Toolbox can be used to fine tune your 3D shots from within FCP. See this tutorial.
Can you recommend a good stereoscopic 3D monitor?
I have tested both the Hyundai S465D and JVC GD-463D10 using the side-by-side mode. They both work well but the JVC seems to have the edge in picture quality. Both of these monitors use passive circular polarized glasses, just like the ones used in RealD theatres.
Does the plugin work with interleaved files made by Silicon DVR?
Now that Stereo3D Toolbox can use interlaced/interleaved files for input from any resolution you should be able to feed it 2K interleaved clips and set the input mode to INTERLACED.
I Have some 3D glasses from a realD theatre. Can I use them?
RealD glasses a circularly polarized. They only work with 3D monitors that output circularly polarized light, like the Hyundai S465D and JVC GD-463D10.
Can I create an output to be screened at a realD theatre?
RealD uses a file formatted as a DCI “Digital Cinema Package.” This DCP is basically a JPEG2000 MXF video file that runs at 48fps and alternates frames left and right. The RealD hardware then feeds these frames to the projector in the correct sequence in sync with the polarizer attached to the projector.
Stereo3D Toolbox currently doesn’t support the creation of “page flipped” 3D files for DCP, but we are exploring that possibility.
However there is stand-alone software called “Clipster” available from DVS that can create 3D DCPs.
Will the Stereo3D Toolbox support real-time playback?
It is difficult to get any FxPlug filter to support full-resolution/full-frame-rate unrendered playback at HD resolutions, but as you can see in my tutorial videos it is possible to work with “Unlimited RT” and Dynamic framerate/resolution. The system I used for the tutorials is a base 2.26Ghz Octo-Core Mac Pro with 6GB of RAM and the Nvidia GeForce GT120 with 512MB or VRAM.
Stereo3D Toolbox utilized VRAM and your graphics card for processing so if you are getting a “red bar” for rendering then your realtime performance may be affected by something in your system configuration... usually 3rd party video cards and drivers. You may also want to check that basic motion, crop, motion blur, etc are not activated on your source clip and that your codec and frame size of the sequence and and source clips match. Please direct technical questions with regard to performance to support@noiseindustries.com
Stereo3D Toolbox only processes sections that are turned on. For example, you are only converting side-by-side into anaglyph then there will be no additional performance hit from convergence controls, autoscale or image controls unless they are checkmarked. We designed the plugin this way so that it is not necessary to have separate subsets of the plugin to perform different tasks.
How can I apply Stereo3D Toolbox to my whole sequence?
If you don’t need to individually adjust every clip in your sequence then you can “nest” the sequence into a new sequence and apply Stereo3D Toolbox just once. The easiest way to nest is to make a new empty sequence and then drag your edited sequence from the browser into the new sequence. Make sure you cleared your in and out points in your edited sequence before nesting.
Is it possible to offline at a lower resolution and then conform?
It is not recommended because convergence adjustments in Stereo3D Toolbox are pixel based and not percentage based. This means that if you make a 30 pixel adjustment in a NTSC downconvert it will be hardly noticeable in 4K. If you need to work with lower bit-rate media for your offline I suggest using a different codec such as ProRes422 Proxy (included with FCS3) but make sure you maintain the frame size.
We may include an option to switch from pixel-based to percentage-based in a future release.
Is it possible to use keyboard keys to nudge the convergence?
Unfortunately no. The parameters are fully controlled by the host application and we can’t access the keyboard from the plugin.
What do the values on the sliders actually refer to?
The pixel values indicated in “X/Y convergence” and “Master Reframe” refer to the amount of pixels each eye is moved. Therefore a value of 1 means that the left eye was moved 1 pixel to the right and the right eye was moved 1 pixel to the left. Half-pixel adjustments aren’t available.
The “Z Convergence” and “L/R Rotation” sliders refer to degrees in a 4˚range (-2˚ to +2˚)
The “L/R Zoom” controls refer to multiplier based on 1. For example a value of 1 means no change in scale. A value of 1.10 means the image is 10% larger. A value of 0.90 means the image is now 90% of its original size.
“Exposure” is based on a nominal value of 0 and a scale of -2 to +2. For example a value of 0 means “no change.” Negative values reduce exposure and positive values increase it.
“Brightness” works in a similar way but with a range of -0.5 (half as bright) to +0.5 (twice as bright.)
“Hue” uses a 40˚ range (-20˚ to +20˚). 0 means “no change.”
“Saturation” uses a nominal value of 1 meaning “no change.” A value of 0 means complete de-saturation and a value of 2 means double saturation.
“White Point” can be used with the eye dropper to compensate for errors in white balance. Use the eye dropper to select an area of “white” in the image.
Anaglyph Opacity controls refer to opacity of a particular RGB channel where a value of “1” is equivalent to 100%. Some controls like “red in right eye” will be limited to 0.25 (25%) to avoid bad anaglyphs.
Anaglyph Gamma refers to the a gamma adjustment value and not the actual gamma value of the source clip.
Does Stereo3D Toolbox support Autostereoscopic displays?
Not yet... but we’re working on it. Come back for updates when v1.0 is released.
How does the Global Output Mode work?
The idea behind the global output mode is that each of your clips in your sequence may have difference convergence adjustments, but you will be required to output multiple 3D formats and a 2D versions. The solution is to use the Global Output Mode in all the clips after adjustments are made and then “set” the Global Output Mode in just one of the clips. The other clips will automatically switch to the same output mode and a new output can be made.
What about support for Avid Media Composer v3.5 and its 3D mode?
An Avid version will begin development soon.
Why doesn’t this website have a forum for suggestions and help?
The official Stereo3D Toolbox forum is located at DV Info Net.
Is Stereo3D Toolbox compatible with the latest version of Final Cut Studio?
What about LOREO 3D LENS IN A CAP?
We added support for the Loreo3D Lens In A Cap in v1.0.2 by adding a switch to turn 2:1 squeeze on and off for the source input in side by side. Use “off” for Loreo3D Lens in a Cap.
